USE OF BLOCKCHAIN ​​FOR REGISTRATION

 One of the main discussions about the usefulness of Blockchain for education concerns the registration of diplomas. The diploma is considered one of the most important documents issued by educational institutions (GRECH and CAMILLERI, 2017). The diploma serves as a document proving the training received by the student and gives him the necessary authorization to exercise his profession.


Currently, there is a growing search for courses in the Distance Education (EAD) modality, so that such courses can be offered, it is necessary to make a wide use of IT resources in Education (PAULA et al., 2018). The entire EAD process takes place through virtual learning environments (VLE), including the availability of the student's diploma at the end of the course. However, there are several cases of forgery of diplomas and this can compromise the credibility of educational institutions and even put the lives of people at risk, by placing unskilled professionals in the market. In this context, it is necessary to implement more robust security mechanisms to give greater reliability to the process of issuing and validating diplomas (GALLARDO; BAZAN and VENOSA, 2019).


According to Harthy; Shuhaimi and Ismaily (2019) it is possible to use Blockchain to ensure better security for the issuance of diplomas, ensuring that they can be validated by any interested person, at any time. The authors present four recommendations, which according to them, should be considered in general when using Blockchain in educational institutions:


Define the conditions for the execution of the Blockchain . It is necessary that the nodes are executed on machines that guarantee an adequate processing power to the application.

Define which cryptographic method will be used . You must know the algorithm that will perform the hash calculation of the blocks. The most widely used is SHA256, which transforms a large number of information into a hexadecimal numeric sequence of fixed size.

Define the rules for using Smart Contracts . If the application makes use of Smart Contract, it is necessary to define its implementation and execution rules clearly.

Transaction tracking . It is necessary to guarantee the traceability of all transactions that occurred on the network and of all nodes that have been mined. However, the work does not present implementations illustrating the feasibility of using Blockchain, which reduces the understanding of how this solution could be used in practice.

For Kolvenbach; Ruland and Grather (2018) it is possible to develop a blockchain-based platform to control the issuance and validation of diplomas and certificates due to the high level of security presented by the network. The paper mentions existing Blockchain-based tools for this purpose: Blockcerts (MIT, 2016), developed by MIT, and TrueRec (BOESER, 2017), created by the SAP group.
