The data path through the internet

Internet is the tool to access information that is probably the most used in the world. However, there are paths that the data we send and receive take to make the magic happen. This is what we will see below.

The structure

Firstly, we need to understand that the internet is a set of networks that interface with each other. Soon, networks will vary in size and range, and the smallest and most well-known LAN's (Local Area Network) may be the giant WAN's (Wide Area Network).

The data travels from an emitter to a receiver, in two ways: Wireless (without cabling) or wired.

Wireless technology sends our data through electromagnetic waves that propagate in the air. However, the wired network (optical fibers) sends our data through pulses of light.

The data path

The data cover distances that vary, from nearby points, such as access to a website hosted on a server in your city, to websites in other countries.

However, there are ways in which data travels. These paths will be presented below.

Backbones

It is the backbone of the data paths, making an analogy, backbones would be the main highways and the distribution points would be the local roads. Therefore, they provide the connection between great distances, linking states and countries.

Let's take an example: when you send an email to a recipient, what happens is the sending of data (email) from the local network to the backbone, from the backbone to the recipient's local network.

Server technicians spend their time installing servers, performing repairs, and - in some cases - building a new system from scratch, configuring new servers, and integrating it into brand new networks.

Access provider

These are services that have the function of connecting a user to the internet, companies that hire the Backbones signal to distribute to their customers. However, they are subdivided into two more types of providers: service provider and hosting provider.

Service providers are responsible for registering and maintaining domains, whether or not they offer services such as hosting.

Hosting providers are companies that offer website hosting services on the Internet and can also offer domain registration to their customers in aggregate.
